Shiva, the Hindu god, is reverently represented by Jyotirlingam. "Jyotis" (meaning "radiance") and "linga" (meaning "sign") combine to form the term. Hinduism places great importance on the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga. The mentioned Jyotirlinga is also known by the name of Sri Bhramaramb Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is renowned for being one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and for being a Shaktipeeth. It honors Goddess Bhramarambika and is situated atop the Nallamala Hills. There are 11 other very auspicious jyotirlingas in India: Mahakaleshwar, Kedarnath, Omkareshwar, Shrisailam, Triyambakeshwar, Rameshwaram, Vaidynath, Bhimashankar, Vishwanath, Nageshwara, and Ghushmeshwar.
Mallikarjuna or Srisailam Temple has ancient significance, as demonstrated by the Puranas. Sri Bhramaramba Devi temple is the sixth of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, and the Mallikarjuna Swamy Lingam is the second of the 12 Jyotirlingas. In view of this, the temple is dedicated to both Shiva and Shakti. Given its prominence, Srisailam is the only temple with two of these symbols housed within its grounds.
